Official Review: Miracles of Recovery by Harriet Hunter
Those who have never been addicts view addiction as a voluntary action. They think that addicts choose to use the products they are addicted to. However, addiction is more than just a choice. Understanding addiction can be hard, especially if you’ve never been an addict. Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditation of Hope, Courage, and Faith by Harriet Hunter is a self-help book that not only deepens the reader’s understanding of addiction but also gives a step-by-step guide on how to recover from different addictions. It mainly focuses on how the author recovered from alcohol addiction.Addictions are vultures of the soul that strip away every semblance of the person we once were, until we become unrecognizable, even to ourselves.
This book has 447 pages. It is divided into over 400 parts. This book is unique, in that each page talks about a particular subject. Although these subjects aren’t completely independent, they can be read and understood independently. The book takes the format of a journal where the author makes daily entries, beginning from January 1st to December 31st. These dates are part of the titles of the corresponding pages. Except for the occasional stories about the author’s personal life, this book is written in the present simple tense, where the author records the events of each day.
As mentioned above, this book is divided into over 400 parts. However, looking keenly into these parts will reveal that they’re further grouped into 11 major parts. These eleven parts are the steps to recovery from addiction. For the sake of this review, I’ll only summarize the first three steps. The first step was recorded on January 16th. It involves admitting that you’re powerless over your addiction and that your life has become unmanageable. The second step was recorded on January 31st. It involves believing that a power greater than yourself can restore you to sanity. It, however, doesn’t force anyone to be religious, or the greater powers to necessarily be God. The third step, recorded on March 3rd, involves deciding to turn your will and life to God as you understand him.
This is an excellent book for people dealing with addictions. I liked that these steps are realistic and are assigned enough time. I also liked that the author used her experiences to educate and help other addicts on their journey to recovery. The author also includes a “Today’s meditation” section on each page. She uses this section to summarize the day’s writing. She also includes quotes from celebrities and famous people that support these daily teachings. Since I only found one grammatical error throughout my reading, this book was well edited.
In conclusion, since I liked everything about the book, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars I recommend it to anyone dealing with any type of addiction and would like to recover from it. I can’t think of any specific group of people who won’t find this book useful.
