Dealing with Early Onset Alzheimer's: Love, Laughter & Tears by Sonia Discher is the author’s memoir describing the experiences she had while having a husband that suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She describes her husband’s diagnosis, as well as his symptoms, while she also explores the emotions she felt throughout this tumultuous journey. She utilizes a conversational, friendly, and simple linguistic style to go over her experiences.

The author begins by describing her husband’s vibrant character. She discusses the romance between them, as they were married when she was twenty years of age. Her husband was named Steve, and he joined the Canadian military, which meant that he had some close calls throughout his life. Next, the writer describes some early signs of Alzheimer’s that her husband displayed, such as forgetting how to fix his lawnmower, and not being able to order at a coffee shop. When Steve was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the writer felt devastated, and they began putting his affairs in order. The author explains that she had to take extra care of her husband, which took a toll on her. For example, she gave him specific instructions on how to do even the most minute tasks.

This book had several advantages that elevated its status. Firstly, the writer expressed her emotions in an engaging way, as she utilized descriptive techniques and linguistic devices to create interest in the text. Additionally, the author expressed herself in an original, unique, and authentic way, as she went over her personal experiences. What I liked most about this book was that the writer added pictures of her husband, which matched the text perfectly, in turn grasping the reader’s attention and adding vividness to the memoir.

What I disliked most about this book was that it was unprofessionally edited since I came across numerous grammatical mistakes in the text.

This book will be appreciated most by older readers who have a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Older readers will prefer this book because they will relate better to the author’s perspectives. Readers of all religions, as well as non-religion, may like this memoir.

All in all, I rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. I did not wish to give the memoir a lower score because it was original, authentic, vivid, and engaging. However, a higher score would not be justifiable due to the high number of errors in the text.

I still have a lot to learn about Alzheimer's. That being said, this must have been an eye-opener. Good job on the review!

I have just finished a book about Alzheimer as well (When a conscience knocks) and just like this book, it shows that it is a devastating disease with a huge emotional load for the family members.

While it's too bad about the number of errors in the text, it sounds like a book about a topic that many readers may relate to. Many of us have had a loved one that has been affected by Alzheimer's and would be interested in reading about the author's experience. Thank you for the informative review!

Not minding the grammatical errors, the book was educative and emotional. I definitely think it's worth more.

This book provides several lessons.
Compassion, medical science, family and patience.

The disease is very malignant and there is no cure, but the help of the sufferer's family will feel helped. Even though in the end he will forget everything, even the smallest thing.

Alzheimer's disease is a disease for the old and most times, I often ask shiver just merely thinking of how my partner would handle it should I get down with it. Reading this book through your review, I am confident and safe that when it comes, if it will, I would surely have resources to use to stay calm and continue to live a wonderful and lovely life. Thank you for an excellent review
