How Much Is This Book Worth to You by Kale H. Bennett explores the numerous factors that can affect the value of a book primarily by asking hundreds of questions that probe the reader. Bennett uses both probable and highly improbable hypothetical scenarios to illustrate the different effects the factors, from the word choice used to the quality of translated versions, could have on the book’s value.

I enjoyed how this book made me consider how I determine the value of things, especially books. Sometimes I change how I value a book without thinking about it, so it was helpful for me to step back and think about what changes my opinion. The book also made an excellent point that the qualities or flaws I see in something someone else could view from a different perspective, resulting in him or her having an entirely different opinion.

This book reads like a person’s rambling thoughts. There are no paragraph or chapter breaks, which adds to this feeling. Initially, this unusual formatting appealed to me, but about halfway through the book, the novelty wore off. I found myself reading a rambling list of questions that are all somewhat related to the question of how the reader values the book. The lack of breaks in the writing also made it difficult to find a place to stop since the book is a little too long to read in one sitting.

Since the book reads like a person’s lightly-edited thoughts put on paper, there was quite a bit of repetition, which was what I liked the least about this book. This is partially because there is quite a bit of parallelism in the questions, which I did not mind. Much of the repetition, however, came from revisiting topics such as the effect the author’s identity has on the reader’s view of his or her work.

I would recommend this book to readers who are interested in exploring how people determine the value of an object. While the questions directly refer to this book, they can easily be applied to anything else. There were not any instances of profanity, so while I would primarily recommend this book for adults due to the thought-provoking nature of the content, I would also recommend it to younger readers who are interested in this type of reading.

The book covered the different aspects that affect a book’s value quite thoroughly, but the repetitiveness made it feel drawn out. There were numerous punctuation errors and a few typos. For these reasons, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.

The title caught my attention, and the concept looked interesting. But the editing and formatting made me think twice. I hope the errors get fixed. Thanks for the recommendations.
