[Following is a volunteer review of "Inside the Mind of a Successful CEO" by David V. Mastran.]
Inside the Mind of a Successful CEO is an excellent guide for anyone wanting to be successful in life, own their own business or who is in a management position. I give the book 4 out of 4 stars. I was incredibly happy with this book, but if I had to come up with some constructive criticism for the author, it would be in regards to the title. When I read the title, I was expecting an inside look at a successful business owner’s habits, organizational strategies or mindsets. What it is in actuality is a well-written textbook for anyone in the managerial field, and it is my opinion that the title restricts the audience to those who want to be successful CEOs and excludes the managers of the world.
The author, David V. Mastran, demonstrates his extensive knowledge in the field of business. The first section, titled “Introduction to Management”, covers the basics: what management is and why it’s important. Common mistakes made by managers are discussed and the author even explains how managers can (and should) learn from these mistakes. Mr. Mastran also explains that good managers know not only their employees’ strengths and weaknesses but also their personal struggles and goals.
Section 2 is a broad generalization of management, and has lessons applicable to all levels of managers. Topics include decision making, hiring, training and firing staff, and organizational structure. The last 3 sections of the book speaks to specific levels of management: unit managers, departmental managers and senior managers. This is truly where the author’s knowledge and experience shine.
As I was reading the book, I was impressed by a couple of things. First, the organization of the book. He outlines everything to be covered in the section at the beginning of the section, so you know exactly what that section will cover. The type of manager the section is about is also defined, which I liked because prior to reading this book, I didn’t know the difference between a unit manager and a department manager.
The second thing that impressed me with this book was the way in which the information was presented. I said above that I feel this book is a well-written textbook; most textbooks tend to be instructive, as one would expect. However, this book uses the author’s personal experiences with his own businesses to illustrate the different concepts. This made it easier to understand the introduced concepts, and gave credibility to the author’s knowledge.
