Official Review: A Life of Unintended Consequences
If you had the opportunity to traverse some parts of Africa by land, would you take it up? Or would apprehension and fear of the unknown make you shy away? I would probably do the latter. A Life of Unintended Consequences by Malcolm Hart gives a captivating account of the exciting and adventurous life led by Malcolm. This biography is suspenseful, confessional, and intriguing.
Malcolm was born into a liberal Jewish family. Unexpected freedom came when his family decided to move to South Africa. He opted out. He'd faced enough prejudice as a Jew and had no desire to endure apartheid in Johannesburg. His freedom allowed him to make decisions without any family resistance. He fell in love with Jean and got married to her. After the failure of his marriage, numerous women went in and out of his life. With the influence of his friends, he got familiar with marijuana and the smuggling business. He switched between careers in advertising, photography, writing, and filmmaking.
The compilation of Malcolm's life story has been properly executed. The narrative moves fast and flows smoothly. His unique attitude towards life makes for an incredible story. Never driven by ambition, he is content to let life find its path. A life filled with adventure, happiness, sadness, disappointment, and success. Malcolm's honest narrative sometimes gets humorous. When talking about his wife's undue interest in other men, he said, 'I'm getting those feelings that creep over me every time she shows an interest in another man... It's early evening when we depart. I'm happy to have him out of my life.' Also, he did not try to cover his failings, lack of ambition, and infidelities.
Malcolm's life story takes the reader on a roller coaster of emotions. I was shocked when his bride, Jean, threw his ring at him and fled from their wedding. His subsequent actions were unexpected. The part I love most in this book is the adventurous hitchhike from South Africa to Addis Ababa. Their numerous stops in strange African towns give the story a unique twist.
Although the text is largely free of errors, I observed that a section of the book containing several paragraphs was repeated in error. The sentences were short and clipped as well. I particularly disliked the confusion of the subject's name. It was written as Malcolm Hart on the book's cover, but as Meneer Hart in the story.
For these reasons, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. However, I found the story to be interesting with many high points. One of my favorites is his daring expedition to hunt crocodiles in Mbeya, an African Village. I would recommend this book to lovers of autobiographies.
