Official Review: Raising a Healthy Child
Raising a Healthy Child by Dr. Meena Chintapalli is an educational book that aims to guide parents and caregivers to give positive early experiences through nurture to children that are 5 years old and younger. The book shows parents and caregivers that children should be nurtured and taught using multisensory integration which should help to prevent behavioral, learning, physical, and neurodevelopmental disorders in young children. Dr. Chintapalli has over 40 years of experience in pediatrics and being a clinician. The book compiles her knowledge from data and personal experiences. According to the author, children absorb everything through their experiences with their caretakers, so caregivers have a very important job in seeing that children reach their full potential. The book is based on a comprehensive educational system called SAI Educare. The system covers a wide range of programs that offer training sessions for parents, caregivers, and preschool teachers to help them to raise, nurture, and educate healthy children.
I liked that the case reports of the author’s actual cases were included in the book. Depicting real situations served to explain how the SAI Educare programs worked and showed how the techniques learned in the programs helped to prevent numerous problems that the children had, such as ADHD, different behavioral problems, and learning issues. Toward the end of the book, the author explained the actual discussions and the activities that took place during the SAI Educare parenting intervention sessions, which further showed how committed she was to educate parents and caregivers. Reading about the numerous people that were helped by the SAI Educare programs gave the book extra weight and importance.
I also really appreciated that the book was thoroughly researched and that there were many references listed. It was very reassuring that the author had so many years of experience working with children as a pediatrician and a clinician. There were also educators that vouched for the fact that following the SAI Educare model has helped children with many different problems.
One issue that I had with the book was that it could have been a bit better organized. I noticed certain information was being repeated in different chapters over and over, and I found it distracting. The repetitiveness could have been fixed with another round of editing.
I’m rating this book 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the fact that the author included her actual cases to show how well the SAI Educare programs could work and how many people were helped by following the SAI Educare guidelines. It was great seeing that real people were positively impacted by all of the programs and that they were successful. I also liked that Dr. Chintapalli had so much experience in her field and that what she was saying was backed up by references and data. Another plus was that the book was superbly edited. I couldn’t find a single grammatical error. I’m taking a star away because the book was a bit disorganized and repetitive at certain points. It was hard to overlook. While it was great that there were no typos in the book, editing could have been better with spotting repetitiveness. I would recommend this book to parents and caregivers who have children that are 5 years old and younger because I think that most of them could take away something from reading it. Preschool teachers could also find this book very useful.
