All myths and facts about Sri Ganesh – the icon of success is a research work based on practical observations considering two deities of the eastern culture, namely Lord Ganesh (there are 129 documented names fro this deity in the book) and Goddess Lakshmi (about 30 names documented).
It is written by Raja Bhowmik a person of varied interests ranging from history and mythology to Astrology and the marvels of present day technology. He works as a management professional and is associated with astrological societies as a hobby. Through the book it is clear that Mr. Raja is a very knowledgeable person, full of interesting facts and stories assuring me that he can maintain a very interesting conversation.
The book itself is relatively short at 75 pages but does not lack anything in form of information. Inside the reader will have the pleasure to read about the aforementioned deities, myths about their person. For example, how they came to existence and accounts of their feats and accomplishments. A particularly interesting story is "Shiva's Laughter" in page 12. These accounts, even though written in simple language manage to engage the reader and create images. Although I often found myself wishing that they were written in a more poetic, novel style in order to get the feel of an actual story being told, rather than a mere account, this didn't prevent me from getting the message conveyed by the author.
Later on, the meaning of the form of the deities is analysed in depth and connections are made to modern day life which will push the reader to reflect upon the ideas and wisdom of the Vedic era. The main topic is how can we, humans, benefit from the worship of Lord Ganesh who is promised to give success in business ventures and remove all obstacles if worship properly and with a clear mind. There are accounts of people benefiting from such worships and in the begining of the book an interesting point is raised when the author shows by means of charts and raw data that 93% of the richest men in India come from regions that worship Sri-Ganesh. Could it be true that we can bring prosperity to ourselfs by divine intervention?
Symbols and ideas are explained, like what are Yantras, Mantras and Tantras. Ways of worship are explained in fascinating detail giving the reader a taste of the core part of the lifestyle of a believer. The author gives the reader the tools by which he could worship and attain the boons handed by the goods engaging us in a spiritual level, opening up the readers horizons and maybe giving us the little impulse needed to start researching a new fascinating topic. I myself shall be off to the local library in a moment to explore this new world that I was made aware of.
The language of the book is fairly peculiar with a strong tendency to omit articles and prefixes and sparsely words are misused but somehow this adds to the atmosphere of the book making it unique. This doesn't get in the way of the reader and is easily put aside. For these reasons I have decided to give this book a 3 out of 4 star rating it for the unique knowledge it has provided me in a simple manner and giving me the impulse to broaden my knowledge.
