The Eight Reasons for Divorce by Thomas G. Papps
This book is a surprisingly great read. I was a little reluctant at first seeing as it is about divorce and that isn't my favorite genre. But, the book just captured my interest and wouldn't let go. I think the reason for my interest in this genre is the way it was written. Mr. Papps shared a lot of intriguing stories which helped me learn a lot more about marriage and divorce in general. These stories drew me in. And they didn't let go. I just couldn't put the book down because I was so interested in learning more about these various people's stories.
Basically, this book starts out with an overview of the general idea of what a marriage is. In this section, we learn about different types of relationships and some interesting cases that Mr. Papps handled. This section covers topics such as open marriages, homosexuality, and bigamy. It is essentially a precursor to the topic of divorce.
In section two, the real topic of this book starts coming into play: divorce. This section goes over a couples reaction to their marital problems and what they do when they notice a problem. It also covers where they turn to get help such as counselors, psychiatrists, and psychologists. Overall, this section of the book is about a person's reaction to the realization that they have a marital problem.
Now we get to the good stuff, so to speak. Section 3 of this novella is about the 8 reasons for divorce. Now, this section is about exactly what it sounds like, the 8 reasons or causes leading to a couples decision to acquire a divorce. In this section, it is explained why couples usually divorce. The reasons go as follows: Sexual Problems, Financial Problems, Loss of Respect, Cultural Differences, Age Differences, In-Laws, Children, and Community Roots. There is at least a full chapter on each reason, so I'm not going to delve into details. You just have to read the book for yourself.
Overall, this is a very good book. I would give it a 4 out of 4. I give it this rating because it gives a great insight and first hand knowledge as to what divorce is. It also give a background as to what marriage is and how to make sure yours doesn't end up in divorce. There are also some helpful pre-marriage tests and marriage tests towards the end. I recommend that you pick this book up if you are considering tying the knot, or want to know how well your marriage is doing.
