[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Affordable Learning Guide: Concrete & Marble Polishing, And Many other Specialty Skills" by Giuseppe Fanone.]
Affordable Learning Guide: Concrete and Marble Polishing and Many Other Specialty Skills is a specialized restoration guide by Giuseppe Fanone. Mr. Fanone became involved in his family’s ceramic tile installation business after being laid off from a car manufacturing plant in Michigan in 1979. He worked installing marble and granite floors and walls for 27 years before switching to stone and concrete restoration and polishing.
I had my son in mind when I decided to review this book. In September of 2019, we moved into a house in Northeastern Colorado that was built in 1910. The house needs a lot of work. My son also enjoys learning new skills and I thought that he might benefit from the wealth of techniques and suggestions shown in this book.
This book is more of a guide for people who would be interested in starting their own stone and marble restoration business than for the do-it-yourself handyperson, but it offers benefits to both. The author provides a wealth of helpful information regarding the tools needed to restore different types of materials. He even suggests a range of prices for different jobs, although readers should keep in mind that the book was originally published in 2007.
My favorite things about the book are the author’s thorough attention to detail, his clarity, and his honesty. He does not shy away from sharing the mistakes that he has made over the years so readers can avoid making similar mistakes. Even someone like me who has no experience in construction or with the materials the author describes is easily able to understand what he is talking about.
Unfortunately, I do not believe that the book was professionally edited. English does not seem to be the author’s first language as he sometimes phrases things differently than a native English speaker might. This wasn’t a problem for me. However, there were numerous minor errors in the text. These did not detract from my ability to understand what the author was trying to impart, but the book would have a more polished feel if the errors were eliminated.
The only real complaint I had about the book was the fact that the author mentioned the need for latex gloves but didn’t suggest alternatives for people with a latex allergy. If he revises the book, I suggest including a paragraph regarding the symptoms of latex allergy. People sometimes do not initially have a latex allergy but develop one over time. Personally, I would recommend using nitrile gloves rather than latex.
This book is a fantastic and concise guide for anyone interested in developing a unique skill that could generate an income. Unfortunately, the number of small errors means that, currently, I can only rate it three out of four stars. If the book were professionally edited, it would easily earn four out of four stars.
