Review by DRN_ROOTS -- Mysteries Of the First Instant
Can science and religion go hand in hand? In Mysteries Of the First Instant by Daniel Friedmann, we try to find the answer to the mother of all questions “ How did it all begin?.” The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the author tells us about his findings through in-depth references. The second part is a summary of what have learned.
My first impression of the book while reading the introduction was that it is going to be a tough read. However, it has been a pleasure to read and understand the author’s view and be a part of his findings. The first chapter begins with the mention of a short historical instance which made me think if I was reading the right book. But once you start reading the chapters we understand the significance of these historical instances and how they paved the way for what we know about humanity. The narrative of a book is a winner. The entire part 1 is a one on one conversation between the author and his teenage nephew Seb. The beauty of the book is that after a point in time we turn into Seb. We ask these questions in mind, and there are instances where Seb asks for the exact questions as we do. It's as if the author knows about the questions that are going to arise from his audience, and he has the answers prepared for them.
The book is presented as a coffee table conversation, but you feel that you need just that one more cup. Concepts of a particle and antiparticle, Time zero, reference to Lego bricks, etc are some of my favorite parts of the book which I felt enhanced my knowledge but at the same time did not go overboard with too much explanation. But the conceptualization of the idea in itself is worth applauding. Science and history are helping each other to solve this problem which is a rarity in itself. For those who are looking for a book that can be completed in one sitting, this one is not for you. It requires time, patience, a lot of (Google) search, and above all a minute interest in the field to ensure that the book gets its credit.
Editing a book like this would have been very difficult but the editor of the book has done a superb job. It takes a special skill set to keep a reader hooked and empower them with the knowledge regarding the new findings. Further, for anyone who does not completely understand the first part, there is a summary in part 2 which will make it simpler for the reader. As mentioned earlier, the book deserves a reader’s respect. It has gone through extensive research and readers of any age group who love cosmology or are intrigued by the concept of the origin of the universe should read this one and other parts that are yet to come.
I will award the book 4 out of 4 stars. The conversational style of explaining the difficult concepts, the addition of historical references at the start of each chapter, the editing, the conversations between the author and his nephew make the book a great read.
