The book is all about cultivating a better you through calculated and tested plans and strategies. Johnathan writes, ‘self-investment is the ability to invest your energy, time, and perhaps some money into enhancing, nurturing, and growing your mindset. This can be done by reading, listening to advice, taking the time to improve your health, learning a new skill, or educating yourself.’ If these words speak to you, then this might be the book for you.
The book begins by defining and outlining the benefits of investing in oneself and clearly showing the financial, mental, emotional, and social benefits of shifting to this kind of self-care. The writer seeks to differentiate between healthy self-analysis and harsh criticism of oneself. There are thirteen questions, which aim at bringing out a clear picture of your life's direction and aspirations. The book also calls for accountability and taking responsibility for one’s mistakes while taking steps to correct and grow from them. Additionally, it outlines the importance of nurturing those within your circle and indicates the significance of developing robust networks.
The author creatively uses business analogies like profits, insurance, liabilities, and assets to explain and reinforce the points under discussion. The aim is to compare you to a business and portray a vivid picture of all the inputs needed to generate the desired output. Additionally, the author uses specific and elaborate examples, like numbers, cash amounts, percentages, and timelines, which explain the concepts further. For instance, a yoga studio owned by Bonny as a business model to show various forms of investment, profits, inputs, and losses. There are two scenarios, and the results are utterly distinct.
My favorite aspect of the read is the chronological flow of ideas and lessons from the first to last chapters. The author also first begins by extensively describing a topic before breaking it down into simple steps. This makes the book easy to implement. The book also allows the reader to note down thoughts, arrange them in columns, and even do some self-reflection. However, the general arrangement of this instructional guide is quite unappealing. The book has a textbook format where the fonts are almost similar, the paragraphs are lengthy, and sub-topics do not begin on new pages. It also lacks an intimate tone, making it report-like and laborious to read.
The book is professionally edited; I did not find any errors. The language is intelligible and free of any profanities, making Self Investment 101 suitable to a wide range of readers. It focuses on self-improvement through working on the less desirable attributes while nurturing the strengths to achieve holistic growth. It also includes suggestions of various unique businesses one might pursue and a few business ideas and opportunities that lie in problematic situations. The book is quite a necessary read. The only flaw is the poor delivery and legibility. Therefore, I have to drop a star and give it a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend Self Investment 101 to those looking for an exhaustive guide to enjoying a productive and balanced life.
