What initiated the Big Bang? What created God? Creation, or The Big Bang? Are science and Religion at war? Are gaps in scientific knowledge evidence for God? Mysteries Of the First Instant is an educational, entertaining, and enlightening book that attempts to answers questions of this nature. The award-winning author, Daniel Friedmann, has a scientific background and also studies religious subjects. This makes him competent to give opinions from both scientific and religious perspectives.

The first section of the book is divided into thirteen chapters, written in the form of a conversation between the author and his teenage nephew about the origins of the universe. His nephew here represents the reader, curious about how life came into existence. The second part dives deeper into the concepts and themes discussed in the first part. These include the physics of elementary particles, time, and space. The last pages of the book are packed with useful references and an easy-to-understand glossary for the information and concepts he presented.

I liked several things about this book. Friedmann's ability to demystify such complex concepts is admirable. He achieves this through visual aids, notes, glossary and conveyed his message in a very clear and straightforward manner. Majority of us first heard of The Big Bang and creation in a class setting or church, the informal nature of his explanation was relieving. He also commences his chapters with historical narratives which greatly enhances the effectiveness of the reading. I loved the sense of meaning and hope that I got after reading this book. At some point in your life, you tend to ask yourself questions like, why am I here and what is my purpose. I may not have fully answered the question, but if creation was intentional and not merely by chance, it means that my presence on this earth is also intentional. I couldn't find anything wrong with this book.

I, therefore, rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was exceptionally well-edited with no spelling or grammatical errors. I highly recommend this book to lovers of either or both science(mostly Cosmology, Astronomy, and Physics) and religion(specifically Judaism and Christianity). Readers of all ages and any religious background will enjoy this book. Friedmann respectfully presented his divisive ideas, this would be a good read whether or not you agree with him. It may, on the other hand, be unsuitable for those who hold non-theistic beliefs.
