Review by Julianna2142 -- Mysteries Of the First Instant
Mysteries of the First Instant: Illuminating What Science Hasn’t Answered about the Inception of Our Universe by Daniel Friedmann and Dania Sheldon was an outstanding read with the author’s personal narrative carefully putting a very large picture into perspective.
This is the 4th book in Daniel Friedmann and Dania Sheldon’s “Origin Series” and it does perfectly fine as a stand-alone novel. I have read one other book from the Origin Series and this book only added to my understanding of modern-day scientific principles while carefully tying together mystic and religious beliefs to reveal the inexplicable sense of unity within our world.
My favorite part about this book was retelling a recent vacation spent with the author and his nephew. Their time together was carefully retold through the inquisitive nephew’s desire to understand the author and his preparation for researching for this book. This format pushes the author to speak about complex theories in layman’s terms and leaves the reader’s comprehension challenged yet accomplished at the end of each chapter. More than anything I loved to hear the respect and appreciation between both nephew and uncle while they each spoke their mind and desire to be understood by each other. I felt sad when their vacation concluded about three-quarters of the way through the book.
Without the conversational tone as the driving force behind our author, I was left to read and understand individual topics through referenced research papers, historic moments in the scientific community, and a lot of information I was not entirely sure of the relevance until the last few pages of the chapter. It left me struggling to remember the significance and specific names of characters in a world I have no personal connection to. Overall, despite struggling to keep the information organized in my mind, everything was very well broken down to its most basic form so every reader can understand its value and application.
This leads me to recommend this book to people with a desire to know more about “The Big Bang Theory”. This book attempts to explain the moment just before the Big Bang took place and also explores several other theories that rival the generally accepted beliefs of today’s origin story behind the Universe’s first moments. The authors speak with an authoritative tone but I really appreciate their focus on highlighting facts vs opinion and leaves plenty of room for the reader to make their own decisions. They are truly writing for informative purposes in an entertaining writing style.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I found no errors and this book was very well-formatted to read cohesively as a stand-alone novel or as the perfect complement to other books of a similar genre.
