Review of Catapulting Commissions
Catapulting Commissions by Anthony Garcia, a commission-based sales expert of more than twenty years of experience, is a short book describing the methods on how to achieve your sales goals. Mr. Anthony describes through stories and personal experience the best way to deal with challenges of setting the goal, and the journey it takes to achieve them. The book also explains the importance of failures, as well as why it is important to ‘fall in love’ with the process of achieving the goal.
Even though I am not sales professional myself, I found Catapulting Commissions to be a very enjoyable read. The book has 109 pages, or around 3 hours audiobook, and I was able to not only read it during one weekend, but also address my own goals and apply what I learned. Although I understand that 'anyone who wants to accomplish their goals’ might not be a proper target, the book could be a great read for broader audience. Since sales executives working on commissions might find to be slightly more able to connect with the book, as it is written in their language, another option could be to have multiple book versions for different audiences (e.g., athletes, students, coaches, etc.), which would make people from various backgrounds still want to pick it up and benefit.
There are many great points throughout the book. One of my favorites had to do with the importance of the result and the process. The result has a role of ‘enhancing emotions necessary to pursue the goal’, and for the process the author says: "If you don't fall in love with the process, and only fall in love with the result, you'll never work through the challenging times that come during your goal". Another thing I liked was the discussion on mental health. It shows that this book not only considers the external support system in form of family and friends, but also the importance of the support system we have inside which is equally relevant to achieve a goal.
On the downside, although the Catapulting Commissions has a subtitle Achieve Your Next Goal the emphasis is on the ‘sales’ rather than ‘goals’, giving a somewhat misguided notion on what the book is about. Reading the title I expected more of the sales concepts, e.g., how to negotiate the sales contract, and even though we get a bit on that, I would not say it is the focus of the book. Also, many of the mentioned concepts I knew well from other sources. For example, the importance of Law of Attraction, SMART goals, or support system etc. is often mentioned in books on acquiring personal and business success. On the other hand, what makes this book so compelling is the fact that it makes for a good summary, and then adds to it, or makes the point to look at the well-known concepts from another perspective. For example, author describes SMARTER goals (adding ‘Relevance’ and ‘Emotion’ at the end), reduce-to-ridiculous-method, etc., making the concepts even more relevant.
The book had great editing and proofreading, and there were not any major errors I were able to find. Overall, it is full of wisdom, with stories and practical examples, which makes me rate it 4 out of 4 stars. Great work!
