Review of Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (Trad. Chinese Edition)
Reading textbooks is something I do not engage in often, albeit not disliking them. It was out of curiosity that I decided to pick this up. That notwithstanding, I am glad I did because I got to know that I am not as knowledgeable as I perceived. As a native English speaker, I did not find the need to study Idioms because I believed I was taught enough in school but was I wrong?
Once I started Idiom Attack Vol. 1: Everyday living(Traditional Chinese Edition), I could not put it down and finished it in three(3) days. I believe in the next few years, that will still be the fastest time I have ever read a textbook.
The book was well-paced. The flow, from the sentence that introduces the idiom, the meaning of the idiom and how to use it to that sweet short story comprehension at the end of each chapter, was just superb. I do not read or speak Chinese after all, so I can not say much about how understandable and professionally edited the Chinese were, but I give a thumbs up to Peter N. Liptak, Matthew Douma and Jay Douma for the excellent job done with the English bit.
It was very interactive, engaging and I sure learned many new idioms, picking up one or two phrases I had no prior knowledge of by the end of each chapter. If you ask me what I enjoyed about the book, then it's the questions for discussions that the authors thought it wise to put at the end of each session. In a sense, I found them calming and intimate, as if a friend was personally asking how I felt about circumstantial matters. It is even more impactful after reading the short story before looking at those questions.
Rather than say I disliked the fact that there were no answers available for the questions under the short stories, I'd say I wish there were some so that students like me who like confirming whether or not the result they had in mind is flawless will have a reference point. Aside from that, I have no misgiving towards this book. Even after going through it ten times, I found no errors.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the enjoyable read and professional editing. I recommend this book to traditional Chinese students who seek to improve their vocabulary and oratory skills in English. Nevertheless, as a native English speaker, I feel every student should give it a try since I learnt a good number of new idioms from this book.
