Ethical Religion & Christian Activism by John Shellenberger is a non-fiction novel that is meant to help Christians understand the right Christian ethics and activities.

We live in an ever dynamic world in which things are constantly changing. Today, the human experience has changed from that of a thousand years ago. Humans now have control over most of the problems of human survival. We now know more, we travel more, we communicate immeasurably better, and we work more efficiently and successfully. Humans now have various technologies that were not available in the olden days. Despite all these, we are still faced with a lot of problems, and numerous decisions to make with all the things happening. People have started noticing that past religious ideas and thoughts are becoming irrelevant to our daily lives. The need to open Christian’s mind to the right Christian ethics and activities gave birth to this book.

The author wrote in details about the state of the church in this generation, as it has started deviating from the true purpose and now moving towards entertainment. He talked about various aspect of Christianity and various topics of concern. Some of them are; The Bible, Historic beliefs about Christianity, Pre-Davidic history, Canonization, Christian Gnosticism and Mysticism, and a lot more. The book also talked about Christian ethics and various issues facing us in the world today. Issues like COVID-19, Abortion, Suicide, Death penalty and a lot more.

I love the author’s writing style and the use of simple language to help the reader understand his points in this book. The author provided detailed explanations on his points, and also made sure that all the facts provided in the book were well researched. I love his explanations on the topic of the bible. He properly presented his points, and made it known to readers that he was not discrediting the bible, but helping readers to see the bible for what it really is. This really got to me. The author also discussed his opinion in a way that doesn’t look like his ideas were forced, but were rightly placed in a way that would convince the readers. This was achieved by the use of various thought-provoking questions in delivering his points.

The author mentioned names of popular ministers and TV hosts, and called them con artists. This is too extreme, and the author could have passed his message across without mentioning names. The book was also written with small font sizes, which made the reading a little strenuous. The subheading in this book had no distinct difference from the other body of the text, and this made the book difficult to read. All these were what I dislike about this book. This book needs another round of editing to make it exceptional. I found just one error in the book, but there is a need to work on the contrast of the subheading mentioned above to ease the stress of reading small fonts. Therefore, I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. This is because the book was still interesting. I will recommend this book to Christians with a craving to know more.
