[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Drinking & Knowing Things" by Michael Amon.]
Drinking & Knowing Things is a non-fiction book written by the world’s leading wine influencer, Michael Amon. It's a DAKT series. It contains a long list of wines accompanied by well-researched information on why they are either great or not so great. The author has a very vast knowledge of wine history, production and taste. He got his knowledge through research and experiment with a lot of wines. In the book, he gave detailed insight into the nature, origin and features of different wines from across the world. His goal is to provide the reader with an assortment of options when he decides to buy a bottle of wine. The book took the reader on a journey of wine discovery.
The book was written after friends of the author, who knew how much knowledge he has about wine, asked that he recommend good wines they could try out. Michael Amon started a weekly recommendation that turned into the book Drinking and Knowing Things. What wines made it to the author's list? What are the positives and negatives of these wines? Find out by reading through the pages of this book.
Discovering the volume of research and years of experimentation that the author had invested in acquiring the information in this book is a major high point for me. The book is very detailed. The author made sure to include every detail that will give the reader a comprehensive idea of each wine. I also love that the book is concise and easy to comprehend. The book is packed with so much information to turn a novice into a wine expert.
The book has a few negative aspects. I did not appreciate the heavy use of cuss words in the book. I felt they were unnecessary in some situations. I also didn't like how dismissive the author was of the personality and opinion of people with who he didn't quite agree with their views on wine.
I found a few spelling and grammatical errors in the book. Consequently, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I didn't give this book a lower rating because regardless of the errors it contained, the conciseness and directness of the information in it made it enjoyable to read. The reader will not get bored at any point.
I recommend the book to wine enthusiasts. They will find the information contained in it to be very helpful in their wine adventure. It will equally equip them to become the go-to person when people in their circle need wine recommendations.
The book contains a lot of cuss words and so is not suitable for children. Readers who do not appreciate heavy cuss words may also want to avoid the book.
