La Trampa del Unicornio is a non-fiction title written by Abel Betancourt. The author begins by discussing the duality between reality and illusions. To illustrate this idea, Betancourt reminds readers that a horse is real, but a unicorn is a product of the imagination. Our minds are susceptible and can fall for the trap of illusion, and the book’s title – which means the trap of the unicorn – reflects this discussion.

Throughout this erudite work, the author discusses a myriad of concepts: ideologies, society, religion, politics, and economics, among others. There are also philosophical discussions of topics like luck and happiness. Betancourt takes readers on a journey through human knowledge, which he believes is a dual between truth and fiction.

I enjoyed reading this book. I liked being taken on such a journey through human knowledge by the author. I found his metaphors and analogies markedly interesting. Moreover, I liked the author’s points of view regarding several subjects. His analyses included Illuminism, socialism, capitalism, communism, democracy, culture, identity, and education, and I appreciated the way he presented them. In this tour de force, Betancourt examined the ideas of several luminaries and philosophers, visiting thinkers like Machiavel, Rousseau, and Karl Marx. This was what I liked the most about the book.

Additionally, I appreciated how the book also dove into current phenomena like fake news, environmental threats, AI, E-Harmony matching couples, and even NYC’s use of algorithms during the Covid-19 pandemic. Betancourt argues that science has become men’s new master and might be limiting our liberties. It is something to think about. We’re ruining the planet, the author says, and climate change and the extinction of species are examples of this.

Considering all the positives previously explained, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There is no negative aspect worth mentioning, and I had a good time reading it. Additionally, it seemed professionally edited, and I only found a couple of minor editing mishaps in it. If you enjoy philosophical discussions, you should take a look at this title. Also, the use of the Spanish language is clear and polished, and if you have an intermediate command of it, you should have no trouble understanding most of the contents.

A journey through human knowledge, which the author believes is a dual between truth and fiction is something new for me and I believe most people will find it a rare topic. You've done great work in a review!
