The book Exploring Wine Regions – Bordeaux France by Michael C. Higgins is a complete encyclopaedia on oenology and viticulture of the vineyards of Bordeaux France. It is interesting, informative, entertaining and educative. The book starts with the history of Bordeaux Wine which originated with the planting of grapes by the wine loving Romans, later promoted by Eleanor who was Eleanor of Aquitaine France as well as the Queen Eleanor of England. The golden era of the Bordeaux Wine was during the period of King Henry II who ensured a great market for the Bordeaux Wine in England. The book extensively describes the effect of soil and climate on the grapes which in turn determines the distinct quality of the wine. The book also provides details on the barrels used for ageing of the wine and also the places where the barrels are stored such as, caves, limestone quarries etc which have a great effect on the quality of the wine.

The book provides detailed information on restaurants, hotels, cuisine, vineyards, wineries and ideal modes for travel along with details of distance and journey time. The author has also provided information on the working hours and contact numbers for booking reservation etc to help the tourists to plan their trips accordingly.

I like this book for its completeness and the presentation. The contents smoothly flow right from the relevant historical origin to the present day status of each class of wine. The book covers all aspects of the wine making process. This book is well presented and is aptly supported by spectacular photographs and maps wherever necessary. At the end of the book, the author provides an index of all the wine regions and wineries discussed in the book along with another index of the restaurants and accommodations mentioned in the book with relevant page numbers for ease of reference. The author has also provided a glossary of terminology used in the wine making process explaining the meaning of various words, concepts and vineyard activities specifying the concerned season.

I have rated this book with 4 out of 4 stars since I found it wholesome and well researched. The book is the outcome of six trips and dedicated research spread over a period of three years. The author has spared no effort to explain in detail every single aspect of the process. The presentation would captivate even a reader not particularly interested in oenology.

This book would appeal greatly to wine connoisseurs as well as students of oenology and viticulture. It would also be a good travel guide to anyone who desires to visit France and it’s wine regions. It provides answers to the question as to what makes the Bordeaux wine unique and special. The author has provided details of workshops and conducted tours organised by various wineries for the visiting tourists along with cost details.
