[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "It Starts With You" by T. L. Boston.]
Learning how to change your mindset can be difficult. When considering the events in the past year, it is easy to see why thinking and acting positively in life seems impossible. T. L. Boston, the author of It Starts With You!, provides a book that helps readers identify what parts of their minds they can change to start fresh in their thinking. Boston lists tips and advice to get readers started, including but not limited to how to find an uplifting community, spend their energy effectively, and take action to instill these new changes in everyday life.
My favorite part of the book was the chapter on hope. I have heard many speakers talk about why hope is vital for a positive life, and this author says the same thing in this chapter. An example Boston gives on how to instill hope is to get a tribe leader. This idea contradicts individualism, an idea that has become rampant in the United States. If I took away anything from this chapter, it would be the importance of a collectivist mindset for life success.
The chapter about energy was another favorite part of the book. The author says that the reader must understand their divine purpose to determine if what, or who, they are spending their energy on is worth their time. Honestly, this was a difficult chapter for me to read. The reason why is because the author made me look at my life to see what I needed to focus my time on. Once a reader starts this chapter, it may hurt to read some of the things he says. However, this is done in a well-intended way, not in an offensive way.
I do have a couple of complaints about the book. The introduction was about twenty pages long; I had to go back to make sure that I did not miss the beginning of the first chapter. I became bored reading the same idea over and over again. There were also over ten grammatical errors in the book, leading me to believe it was not edited professionally.
Despite the complaints, the book still has great ideas and pointers for positive thinking. Because of the grammatical errors, I have to rate It Starts With You! 3 out of 4 stars. Rating this book with two stars would have discredited how helpful it can be to the right readers. I recommend this book to readers who are new to learning how to change their mindsets. The only audience that I can think of that may not enjoy it are veterans of this practice. Even still, they may learn something new from reading this book.
