“ ’You Have Lipstick on Your Teeth’ and Other Things You'll Only Hear from Your Friends In The Powder Room” is a collection of nonfiction short stories for and about women and some of the day to day issues women deal with. It is written by a group of different female authors who contribute to a website called “In The Powder Room”. Many authors also have their own blogs, several of which I’m looking forward to exploring after reading this book.
The stories in this collection include touching, authentic, and hilarious stories, most of which are only a few pages in length. Unfortunately, the length doesn’t make the book any easier to put down. I may have compulsively read half of the book in one sitting! A few stories made me actually laugh out loud and at least one brought tears to my eyes in empathy. The authors discuss such topics as aging, motherhood (or lack thereof), and the joys of marriage and friendship.
I loved reading this collection of stories and connecting with the experiences of several authors. Even stories about things I haven’t experienced, such as how gross the day to day life of marriage can be, became relatable through the details and fun each author put into their stories.
However, there were some weak stories and at least one where a thin premise was stretched too far. Thankfully, the stories I didn’t enjoy were certainly the minority. Hopefully, other readers will find those stories I didn’t connect with amusing, though. A couple of stories did move into territory some might deem uncomfortable, but it was more for the sake of honesty than it was to be unnecessarily raunchy. A quick look through the titles of some stories may give some examples of what I mean, such as one detailing just what one grandmother uses her washcloth for.
I would definitely recommend this book, and I would rate it at 4 out of 4 stars. I think it is aimed at grown women, rather than teenagers or young girls, but I feel like it is relatable to nearly any woman who may be interested in reading it. The stories are both funny and honest, and I found myself both laughing and quietly nodding along with most of what I read. I have a great deal of respect for anyone who can be honest enough to post their embarrassing stories on the internet along with their real name. This book was written by a collection of very brave people.
