In Jennifer Jackson’s How to Be Popular with Boys (And Other Advice for Teens), the book is broken down in to two parts. The first part: she covers the nature of guys, the secret to attracting them, and how to get them to ask you out, but also how to achieve confidence. In the second part: She talks about life and the paths that we take. She also provides three simple, though sometimes difficult, rules to live by: 1. Steer the car, 2. Live Your Life Carefully, and 3. When in doubt, don’t. She relates these three rules to difficult issues teens face such as alcohol, drugs, sex, birth control, STDs, and virginity.
Jackson’s advice rings home for girls of all ages. Her arguments for her advice are useful, practical, and are extremely helpful. Her advice in and of itself is realistic and easy to understand and integrate into one’s relationships. In addition, the information she provides for readers comes from not only personal experience, but also friends and experts. This gives the book not only a human element, but also gives it a bit of weight.
The layout is well-done and sections are easy to turn to for further reference. Her references to herself make the book seem more relaxed. The bullet points create a no-nonsense feel to the book. I also liked how in her section on attraction, she emphasized that you don’t have to be a size 0 to attract a guy. She touches on makeup, clothes, accessories, and appearance, but also personality and humour, making advice seem deeper and less shallow. I liked how she gave suggestions on how to accessorize; because that is one area a lot of people have trouble with. I also liked how she encouraged girls to not only be themselves, but to stay themselves. Her tips for handling breakups were helpful and useful. Although crying as stress relief doesn’t work for me, it and the other tips probably would be useful for girls.
Overall, I give it 4 out of 4 stars. The advice given in this book is priceless and should be given to any teenage girl needing some advice. It covers all the issues that teens run into as they grow up in a way that won’t make the readers feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. I’d recommend this for any girls who are in their “Finding Yourself Years”.
