Writers have a very special role in our societies; that of telling our stories to the world. Sometimes, we need our visions for the future told to us for inspiration, other times, we need to be reminded of our dreams and imaginations for the past. That is where fiction writers come in. Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles, seeks to give writers guidance on the things to consider when writing these kinds of stories. Being a renowned and established writer of Fiction Literacy, he is the right person to advise on this topic.

The book covers a range of topics. It talks about the requirements and skills needed for writing great literacy stories. The author goes into the aspects of characterization, narration, meaning, purpose and imagery. He organizes his work into different chapters with each chapter covering one of these specific aspects. He also talks about ways through which one can enrich their writing through features such as humor and dialogue. He gives interesting and clear excerpts in trying to put his points forward.

I love this book mainly for the insights it holds. It contains a lot of vital details that can help one improve their writing. The stories that the author used in the book to make his points were interesting and captivating. I love that he covered almost all the aspects of story writing in enough detail to help both beginners and those with experience in writing. One would be forgiven for thinking the book is boring considering the topic it covered. William, however, manages to make the book so interesting and engaging. There was no point during my encounter with the book that I felt like the writer was getting boring.

I also loved the organization of the writing. All important details were written in bold, making it quite easy to track aspects one would want to revisit. I was particularly impressed by the author's advice on the use of energetic words. In this regard, he gives a detailed explanation and guidance on how a great writer should describe a sentence as simple as; He sat on a chair. I thought that was brilliant. I have to say that there was nothing I disliked about this book.

The language the author used was simple and easy to understand. The book was professionally edited as I encountered only few grammatical errors that did not, however, distort my reading. I, therefore, give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I'd recommend it to all writers, especially those that would like to be great writers of fiction literacy.
