Review of Don't Mind Me, I'm Just Having a Bad Life
Lewis Kempfer’s memoir, Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life, is a captivating story about his life journey thus far. He tells his story in vivid detail, making you feel as if it is a work of fiction rather than an excellent piece of autobiography. The story begins in Kempfer’s childhood in the 1970’s and follows his life through coming of age as a gay male in the 1980’s, finding his place in the world, chasing after dreams and romantic interests, battling addiction, and finally finding meaning in his life despite not being where he always wished he would land. He writes with such captivating emotion that you cannot help but feel it with him.
Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life is raw and unrelenting, which accurately conveys the struggles Kempfer has endured. He is detailed in the stories he shares, causing the reader to relate to the humanity expressed in the pages. However, the explicit nature of the story makes it one that might not appeal to everyone. Those who do not want to read descriptions of abuse (physical, sexual, and verbal), drug use, and other potentially disturbing situations might not want to read this book. Due to Kempfer’s disclaimer of the content in the introduction, I do not believe this aspect is a downfall of the book.
On the contrary, the openness of Kempfer’s writing is clear and downright human. It is inspiring to read about his life, which has been filled with much tragedy and trauma, yet his humor and drive to keep going have been preserved. It was also refreshing to read a story that was unabashedly told, and yet did not carry a clear agenda aside from the sharing of one’s life. The vulnerability to share the intimate details of his life is an aspect of the book that has left an impression on me. I do not have any negative points to share.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy hearing about the life stories of other people. Particularly, those who enjoy other autobiographies and memoirs. Although this is a work of non-fiction, those who like contemporary fiction might like this book as well. There were many times throughout the book that I had to remind myself that I was reading a real story about someone’s life because it was that well-written.
Overall, Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life was an excellent read. I found it hard to put down and would look forward to reading it every day. Kempfer’s ability to tell his story was captivating and inspiring, though raw and hard to read at times. He showed a humanity and vulnerability in this book that I will be thinking about going forward.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
