Review of The New Eugenics
The New Eugenics by Conrad B. Quintyn was an interesting and highly detailed read. I gave this book a 4 out of 4 rating.
This book explains the mechanism of the new eugenics, described by the author as the improvement of human lifespan, health and ecology. In the introduction, doctor Quintyn gives the definitions for old eugenics and new eugenics, thus providing a good distinction between the two. Next, summaries of various researchers are provided with the purpose of further understanding of the concepts analyzed in the book. The author highlights the advantages and disadvantages these bioengineering test, encouraging the reader to self-analyse the power of meddling in nature's way. The author rises question of concern regarding the ethical use of these technologies, possible disastrous results and the necessity of humans "bettering" themselves of other life forms.
This book is a brilliant read for those who want up-to-date information about this specific branch of science that affects all aspects of human life currently and in the foreseeable future. The terminologies used by the author are accessible to both those in the field and those outside it. It is thus used to be understood by everyone, since the topics in the book are a world-wide point of interest. There is even a glossary of terms in aiding the complete understanding of the book.
Doctor Quintyn gives multiple reason for caution in using all these wonderful technologies provided by the latest discoveries in the field of eugenics. Although modifying food to meet our growing populations needs and even finding a proper cure to certain diseases such as cancer, there are great negative aspects to them that ought to be considered, such as politics, ethic, legislation, finances and DNA mutations. The New Eugenics a well written and highly documented book, that explains in detail the cost, consequences and life-improving changes of scientific development.
I recommend everyone read this book for its precious information regarding a topic that affects more or less every single person on earth and I encourage people to challenge their own views on the matter. I found no negatives.
The rating of 4 out of 4 was the only rating suitable for such a well written book. Doctor Quintyn pin-pointed the reasons why we should consider both the benefits and the risks involved in the use pf biotechnology techniques, most of which could have permanent effects on human health, ecology and safety. This book is a wakening-up call to a topic most of us have not direct contact, but is becoming more and more present in our live. Due to the cursive language and extensive documentation, this book is both an introduction in the complex world of eugenics and a good summary for all of its aspects.
