Review of When Love Responds
"For I know this is just the beginning. Bey Tey or no Bey Tey, I'm unstoppable."
One of the lines of Yolanda, affectionately known as "Yo," refers to the girlfriend of the yummiest man in her college, Paul Williams.
Yo has a desire to make it with Paul, and she has prepared many plans to make it come true. However, her past traumatic experience and relation with God interrupt her plans. In the end, she has to give up Paul for Jesus. But nothing you sacrifice for Jesus will let go without coming back better, right?
When Love Responds is more than a love story of Yolanda Gates and Paul Williams. If I can sum it up, this is a story of how ones' relationship with God affects their relationship with humans. Unique Hart, the writer, has successfully created a story that plays on readers' emotions. I could smile, laugh, cry, and be angry while reading this book. In addition, I was delighted with the unpredictable plot, which made me couldn't stop reading the story.
However, there is something that bothered me. I think the personality of the main character, Yolanda, is quite confusing. At the beginning of the story, she is portrayed as an outgoing and confident girl. She often shows how much she loves Paul and even dreams about him touching and kissing her. On the other hand, she is known to have a traumatic experience, simply put, she was raped, so she still has a trauma to make an intimate relationship with someone. I was just confused about what was going on in her mind. Her personality changed every time. She even told Paul what had happened to her without hesitation, even though they had only met a few times. I mean, she hasn't told her mom, but she has told Paul. I had no idea about what's going on inside someone who has a traumatic experience, but I am sure that they will set some kind of limitation with someone, especially if it is related to privacy. However, this is just my opinion, and I am not a psychologist.
Therefore, anything besides Yo's character is excellent. I found a few minor punctuations and capital letters errors, which didn't affect my enjoyment of the story. As a result, I will give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating.
I thoroughly enjoy the story even though it refers to a particular religion, and the theme is mainly about God's love. However, some readers might find it uninteresting. People who enjoy reading about love and faith will love reading this book.
