Fat and Blind by Alex Berger is a short memoir that chronicles a trying time in the author's life and his unique journey through it. Twelve-year-old Alex Berger gets involved in a car crash that leaves him fighting for his sight. With new habits that left him dealing with their effects, Alex struggles to get not just his weight under control but his life as well. Alex explores different methods and strategies to achieve this.

If ever a book can be described as 'simple,' then Fat and Blind will be it. The book is an easy read, with a language that flows gently and takes no time to go through. Despite the conciseness of this book, it is indeed a 'powerhouse,' packed with so much spirit and life that readers may not help but fall in love with it.

The author teaches readers a ready lesson in kindness and love. His ability to draw joy into the lives of others, despite his troubles, is worth emulating.

Through Alex's life, we see addiction and its effects on the human body, whether it is alcohol or cigarettes. Alex extends this issue of addiction to modern-day dependence on technology: phones and social media. This issue is salient because social media has people, especially the young generation, taking their validity from how many 'likes' they get. Depression caused by social media is not only real but has also been the foundation of many lost lives.

Alex uses Fat and Blind to show readers that good habits can indeed be transformative and that they play a massive role in our outlook on life. Alex's story is one of grit and perseverance. Through his never-give-up attitude, a new world of possibilities opened up for him. He shows us that life is about responsibilities, and sometimes, the greatest rewards come from taking the greatest risks. The author is a risk-taker, and readers will see that in his many adventures and spontaneous actions. Readers may want to learn from Alex how to test limits and exceed boundaries set by society and our human body.

The most impressionable part of this book is the 'Afterword.' This part is saturated with so much wisdom and inspiration and comes across almost as a dare. It's a dare to readers to challenge themselves and attempt to be better in life. It feels like Alex threw down the gauntlet with this book. Hopefully, a reader or two may pick it up and be better for it.

Fat and Blind is a profound inspirational piece. It is highly recommended to readers who require a little push to believe that they can do anything. Everything about this book is top-notch, including the editing. I rate this book four out of four stars.
