Carved from a true story, Peter Simon Karp’s logjam of a beauteous mind is a remarkable literature of a family history. The author takes us through Mona Pecheux Karp’s fight for survival after being diagnosed of lung cancer. Despite having barely touched things which causes lung cancer such as smoking, she finds her being part of the lung cancer statistics of her period. A family which has been marked with happiness and recreational travels, finds hope, for the survival of Mona, hanging by just a thread of hope in medical science. In a demonstration of love, Karp turns himself in to a care giver for his seek wife. But, in a twist of fate, Karp finds himself struck by an unclear disease, and his care giving to Mona seems to be uncertain. The book also reveals a deep insight in to cancer patients from a practical point of view. Some just think that being diagnosed with cancer is a straight death sentence, while others cling themselves to whatever hope they can afford to lay their hands on. Some, like Brittany, are confused as to what they want—they continue in the path of things which kill them but at the same time, continue to seek treatment.

I just liked the author’s technique of using the third person narration when walking through the blizzard from the hospital to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, just to show how much his mind was in bad shape. Not to mention that, despite frequent shifts to flash back, from current events, the pen managed to keep the smooth flow of the book. Even its flow is so good, that you cannot even believe that it was stitched together from real events.

I have found the content of this piece of literature to be good and I couldn’t pick anything bad about it. Actually the memoir couldn’t have been better than this. One couldn’t have suspected that it is a work built from notes of real history, had it not been for the confession of the author himself.

The book is a good piece of work and it is admirable. Even if I have noted some errors, they are so few and I do not hesitate to award it 4 out of 4 stars.

Logjam for a beauteous mind will be a good choice for those interested in family stories, especially because of its themes which include hope, and caring for each other as a family. If you are such a group, do not resist to grab this book and make it part of your shelf.
