I have been on many cruises in my life, and therefore find the wide array of workers on board extremely interesting. For this reason, I was so excited to read Cruising For A Living by MB Steyn when I saw that it was the diary of a cruise ship worker, but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations whatsoever.
The main purpose of this short story is to inform others how to apply and interview, in order to get a cruise ship position. It includes many links to websites, in order for the reader to find where to apply for such positions. She becomes very repetitive in what she is saying, and does not cover anything more than a spa position. She refers to how much it cost quite often, but only once refers to it in U.S. dollars.
There are quite a few grammatical errors in here as well, and although she explains in the beginning that it was written in laymen’s terms, I still believe that she could have been a little more grammatically correct. I understand that a lot of the words did not translate well, as she also included that she was writing in South African English, which is not the same, but unfortunately I think it was a lack of spell check in some areas.
Another thing that I found to be an issue is that some parts of the book were confusing. It was not as if I could not understand what she was trying to say, but she either kept resaying her previous sayings, or looking forward in the book. For example: in the middle of one of the passages- it states What to pack- see Chapter 7. If she was not going to tell me what I needed to pack at that point, I don’t see any reason why she should have brought it up at that point. It was not relating to anything that she was talking about at that point. Another issue with this statement is that the “what to pack” list was in chapter 6, not 7.
I would rate this book 1 out of 4. It is a how-to book, not typically the kind that I would usually pick up. If it had more information about actually working on the ship, I probably would have scored higher, but I believe that the only people that would find anything of importance from this are those that are trying to find out how to work for a cruise ship in the spa.
