Review of The Successful Manager
The Successful Manager
The book ‘The Successful Manager’ is a business guide to be an ultimate manager. It is written by James Potter and Mike Cavanagh. James Potter is a Senior Managing Director at Blue Ridge Partners and Mike Kavanagh is an executive coach. What better way to learn about becoming an ultimate manager than from ultimate managers themselves? The book contains various ways that can be useful for a manager to work effectively and efficiently. Major issues faced by a manager like working with different personalities are explained thoroughly in this guide.
One of the major things I liked about this book is that it explains most practical scenarios in a manager’s professional life and analyses it to deal with it and it also helps the reader to not make similar mistakes again. It also suggests various ways/perspectives to handle the given situation. It used the SBIS (Situation, Behaviour, Impact, Solution) framework to analyse the situation, find possible solutions in a step-by-step manner. It also explained the Eisenhower Decision Matrix to effectively categorize the tasks a manager has in 4 separate categories (urgent important, non-urgent important, urgent non-important, non-urgent non-important) based upon the time duration required to complete a task. Moreover, the importance of delegation is explained in great detail. Effective delegation is key to efficiency. Managers should also be a friend to the team’s members to further increase efficiency.
Moreover, the manager should also provide constructive feedback whenever they feel appropriate and take enough care so that the teammate does not receive it in a bad way. The manager should offer both positive and negative feedback to help strengthen the foundation of management. The scenarios I just described are some of the multiple ones present in the book. The authors have gone through some trouble to make the book interesting to read and easy to understand.
Overall the book is professionally edited. I found some typing errors here and there but they do not in any way disturb the way you read the book. Some time is required for a person to implement the tactics described in the book. Reading the book several times can be helpful in mastering those tactics quickly. This book is like a guide to becoming an ultimate manager.
All things considered, this was an enlightening read. I find the way this book encourages people to be to the point and clear to their objectives in their professional lives extraordinary. I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I am sure many people would benefit by adding this book to their library and by trying to implement the tactics described in this book to the fullest.
Individuals who are seeking to be managers and the managers seeking enlightenment will be most beneficial by reading this book.
