- Latest Review: The Successful Manager by Practical Approaches for Building and Leading High-Performing Teams
Review of The Successful Manager
The Successful Manager by James Potter and Mike Kavanagh is a novel for young managers starting their careers in management. The novel will act as a helping hand for them. The novel is all about building a strong team of high ethics and performance. The book talks about the need for high moral leaders in the industry with their perks and responsibilities. It shows the traits of high-performing managers, like how you can spot them. How a manager should set ambitious goals with a plan in mind can be fruitful for his team and overall growth. The author has expressed his views on how to prioritize the work, how to select a best-men for the work, and how the delegation of the work should be respectful. Managing time is a milestone for everyone, we must master it, and the book has a glimpse of it. The interaction of manager and team members affects the work culture, hence need to coach your team, and constantly take feedback for improvements.
The most incredible thing about the book is that it has also considered, how management style affects relationships and performance. Hence, managers need to tailor management style as and when required. Motivating the team, and inspiring them for growth is most critical in management because we solely depend on our team. They must feel good to work for our organization. Hence, building a team of high morale and work ethics are precious. We need to trust our team members, take their inputs for improvements; it will make wonders for the organization. One thing which caught my eye was how simply the author has briefed the situation managers have to go through and need to manage all that mess in and out.
The book has many affirmative points, but it could have explained the situation wherein managers need to leave the company. The managers face a hard time dealing with such incidents. Hence, I believe it would be a great help for managers if they how to deal with such situations for sake of their state of mind. Such situations have many implications for mental health as the decision to leave to a company is hard to digest.
The arrangements of chapters, sentences, summaries, and thoughts put in order have made me leave a rating of 4 out of 4 stars for the novel. I could have given it three stars, but it would be unfair to the author. I really feel he has put his best at work. The novel also has the key learning at the end of the chapter that is helping in revising the chapter and exercising those thoughts in practical situations.
The novel is a great read, and I recommend all the leaders to read at least once, it will nurture a new perspective on how you recognize the teams and team members. Employees can also go through the book to discover the challenges their managers have to face. Employees will also get to know what they will go through or have to deal with if they decide to become a manager.
