Creating literary stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles is a writing guide on how to write a fiction novel. It teaches how to make more compelling characters, and how to create intricate plot lines with examples. The book starts by introducing the reader to basic words commonly used in writing.

Beginners who are just dipping their toe into writing will appreciate this fictional guide since it starts from the basics. I enjoyed how the author discussed character creation and character development. A lot of his suggestions and guidelines were useful to me and I will certainly use them in the future. The guide was organized and explained with examples, making it easy to follow. Each chapter begins with the author explaining all the terms he will use in the chapter, so it's almost impossible to not understand his points. He used the story of Little Red Riding Hood to explain narration voice and how Red's story could easily be transformed into another genre by changing the narration style, which I really liked.

As an author, William is clearly professional and passionate. He provided examples at every point, which made understanding his point very easy. He pointed out potential problems with the writing process and provided pointers and guidelines on how to resolve them. This book can only be written by an author who has made mistakes while writing and overcame them.

In this book, the only issue I had was how he presented everything as if they were all facts rather than his own opinions. He talked about his point of view on writing to be like it was factual, when writing is overall really subjective. Fiction is a subject that everyone sees in a different way, especially authors. While it was annoying, it did not affect my overall rating. You should always keep in mind that writing is a unique process for every author, and it's more crucial that you come up with your own style and narration than copying someone else's.

I would overall rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed it. There was just enough information about every topic to keep the reader interested.

It would be a great book for people who are new to writing or just getting started. I don't think people who are already writing could gain a lot of knowledge from this book, since it isn't a deep guide. If you are just starting out in the world of writing, this book is definitely for you.
