Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Have you ever thought about what gives life to fictional stories, what elements a reader is engrossed in a story, and what makes them so realistic? Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles contains everything you need to know on creating a standard fictional literary story.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part, The Literary Story in Fiction, talks about the essential elements of literary fictional stories. It contains information the writer needs to know before beginning to create his/her story. Here, the reader is introduced to things like character development and importance, dialogue, narration, conflict, humor, point of view, and many more. The second part, Creating a Literary Fictional Story, sort of serves as a guide for the reader in creating his/her stories. Some elements introduced in the first part are further discussed. The reader is also put into consideration, and we're shown how to keep the readers involved in the story.
This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. What I love most about this book is its organization and content. The topics discussed in the book are very helpful to authors and aspiring writers. The organization was superb and was done in a way that ensured maximum understanding. The author didn't write the book based on hearsay or assumed knowledge. The book contains well-researched, factual information. I learned a lot of things from the book. I believe people who have the intention of writing fictional literary stories or are amateur writers would find this very helpful because it will guide them through every stage of the story.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. I love the way the author used stories as examples to explain his points. Using those stories gives the reader a practical example so he/she can understand better and also know how to use the element discussed when writing his/her story. After reading this book, I got to understand many things I didn't know before. The book also helped me to correct some misconceptions I had about fictional stories. There were several topics discussed, but the ones that stuck with me were the importance of dialogue and conflict, the benefits of using a character-based plot, and the advantages and disadvantages of the first-person point of view.
The book was exceptionally and professionally edited. I didn't come across any errors while reading. The book is a very helpful guide for aspiring writers and established authors too. I'm therefore rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to authors, aspiring writers, and lovers of literary fiction novels.
