For intermediate level learners of the English language looking to upgrade to the advanced level, Idiom Attack Volume 1 Everyday Living (Japanese Edition) by Peter Liptak comes in handy. Laced with over 300 commonly used idioms in contemporary English language, this book elaborately teaches the meanings and proper usages of idioms with full translation into the Japanese language.

The idioms, categorised into 25 Chapters each on a different topic give the user a wholesome learning experience. The book has an exercise at the end of each topic to test the learner's understanding plus a sample text in which all the idioms are used in their rightful contexts to paint a practical picture on the use of these idioms. Thereafter are questions about the sample text and other questions for general discussion. At the end of every five chapters exists a crossword puzzle on the usage of the preceding idioms that provides for a fun yet more engaging learning approach to the learner as they attempt the puzzle. But in order not to leave the reader in dire straits, and to simplify the learning process, answers are provided at the end of each assignment.

What I like most about this book is the unrelenting contextualization of idioms taught through composing a simple text in which all the idioms are used appropriately. The puzzles after every five chapters give the reader more time in lieu to thoroughly go over the content in the preceding chapters as they answer the puzzle. Plus the book delves into in-depth idiomatic vocabulary such as a "Powwow" to mean a lengthy meeting organized to discuss serious issues among others. Furthermore this book provides follow up information on the idioms by supplementing with the applicable synonyms and antonyms wherever deemed fit.

There was nothing I found deplorable about this book as I encountered no typographical error during my reading. I therefore rate this book four out of four stars . I recommend this book to Japanese citizens with the zeal of learning English in depth plus general English speakers who wish to delve a step further and progress from only knowing the basic nitty gritties of the English language to more advanced practitioners of the genres of the English language.
