The Drug-Free Sleep Solution: The Four-Week Program for Overcoming Insomnia Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by David Durocher will leave you greatly informed and hopeful for a better sleep pattern and a healthier lifestyle. David Durocher enlightens readers about CBT-I with detailed steps and instructions on how to effectively use it.

This book reveals shocking facts about insomnia. Insomnia is often trivialized because it isn't seen as deadly but it has links to conditions that can be fatal like; stroke, heart attack, hypertension, diabetes, etc. After reading this book, I believe insomnia needs to be taken more seriously. David Durocher got candid as he shared his personal experience with insomnia, and this display of sincerity made me feel like he genuinely wants to help. He wants readers to understand that they aren’t alone, he's been there and he understands. After reading his personal experience, I concluded that he is in an excellent position to give helpful advice because he isn’t a stranger to insomnia. No one should give up or feel helpless, because there is hope.

Although I don't suffer from insomnia, I know someone who does, so I paid keen attention and took notes like I was in a classroom, and I will definitely be sharing this book with him. I learned quite a lot, for instance; there are two types of insomnia, primary and secondary. After those two types of insomnia, there are still other categories like psychophysiological, idiopathic, and sleep state misperception, all under primary insomnia. I also learned a new term, “presenteeism,” which you can also learn by reading this book.

What I really like about this book is that he listed his references and sources each time, so I didn't have to take his statistics or words as the gospel truth. By doing this, he gave me the chance to make my discoveries. Also, all his instructions and questions are very detailed and clear. He also provided a sample of what your sleep diary for CBT-I should look like, making it easy to understand and follow this program.

The language used is easy to understand, the paragraphs and chapters are properly spaced which created an appealing look and helped with its readability. I tried the breathing techniques and I found them easy to follow and very helpful. He also suggested other books to help with forming positive thoughts and meditating. In addition to all this, it is a very short and easy to read book.

The book is well-written and I have no negative aspects. Another thing I like about this book is that he used a favorite Bible verse of mine, Philippians 4:13, which has been a source of encouragement for me at different points in time, so it was easy to relate to his message. Although he also recommended the Christian Meditation technique, among others, he made it clear that it is a personal choice to use or not to use this technique. I gladly rate this detailed and well-written book a 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone suffering from insomnia, anyone looking to learn about insomnia and solutions for it, and anyone who knows someone suffering from insomnia. If you are someone who enjoys learning, whether you suffer from insomnia or not, I recommend this book to you too.
