Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles is a great piece which will aid every serious writer to improve on his or her storytelling prowess. This book covers the major aspects of storytelling which include: Dialogue, Narration, Structure, Point of View, Writing in Scene, Drama, Humor, and Revision. This book is a masterpiece. It opens with the elementary aspect and, progressively, it translates into the advanced aspect of storytelling.
Enthusiastically, I read through the pages of this book as a prospective writer and I got attracted to some salient points that will make me a better writer. One of those positive aspects is the use of conflict. How can this term be used to one's advantage in winning over the minds of interested readers? Literary stories are not just ordinary stories. Conflict serves as the fuel that keeps the storytelling dynamic. However, it does not work alone. This calls for a skillful blend of conflict with action and resolution. What happens if they are not correctly applied? It makes the story appear insignificant. Since storytelling involves narration, it ought to entertain and engage its readers. Another notable positive aspect of this book is the plot structure. And an important aspect of that is the transition. How are the scenes linked together? This is important because there must be a beginning, a middle and an ending. A thorough transition in that regard will make a great literary story. What makes a literary storytelling dynamic? There is always a change in the art of storytelling in every generation. Therefore, the language in use while writing a story should involve an exhaustive vocabulary. Clichés should be avoided. Instead, fresh and vibrant language should be used. Some attributes of great stories are contained in this book. Before a story will be made available to the general audience, a good writer must answer some compulsory questions while placing himself or herself in the position of its readers. They are distinctively discussed in this book.
I enjoyed this book so much that I did not observe any negative aspect in it. The writer gave diligence to details while writing this informative and educative piece. Obviously, this is coming from an authority in this noble field.
This book covers every aspect of storytelling that will make a writer more competent after reading it through regardless of his/her level of accomplishment. It was exceptionally edited and thoroughly formatted. Hence, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
This book is loaded with ideas from the wealth of experience of William H. Coles, an award-winner who is into creative writing. Therefore, I recommend this book to every everyone whose dream is to become a great writer.
