Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
We must all be familiar with that small book that guided us to write clearly. Up to now, we can easily utter its title and the names of the authors. More importantly, we remember the practical lessons from it that we learned to live. Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles can very well become that type of book, this time, as ready and memorable reference material for writing fictional literary works. Coles takes us to a step-by-step understanding of the elements of good literary works and how to write them. He discusses the principles for making these elements work, tells us clearly which ones are the most important and why they are so, and cautions us on potential pitfalls. He shows us examples.
This book delivers on its promise: it is a guide for the fiction writer. It is a good one for its being concise, direct to the point, and short.
I did notice that there were repeated ideas in different parts of the book. As a manual, it would be preferable to discuss each point as thoroughly as possible in one place, instead of in several. In this way, whenever you would like to review a concept or an element for good writing fiction stories, you would know exactly where to look. With that said, perhaps, the writing could be made tighter.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The author gave valuable information, and he shared his expertise and experience.
If you are a writer entertaining the thought of coming up with literary stories, this is a book for you. It will tell you what you need to master to be successful. If you are already a writer of literary fiction, this is a book for you to keep handy. There's nothing like having a dependable guide that you can readily consult whenever you feel like checking if you are doing the right thing or not. If you are not a writer but a reader like me, this book is also worth having. I used to sense when there was something off with what I read. Now, I can identify the wrong that I get to read, and I have the names for these errors. This book has provided me with the elements with which I could assess more objectively a literary work. If you are gauging whether you should finally start creating your dream stories, this book will enlighten you. You may probably be able to answer whether you have what it takes to be a good fiction writer.
