Review of Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide
[Following is a volunteer review of "Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide" by William H. Coles.]
It is a thing for a person to have an idea or inspiration; it is another thing for him to express himself clearly through writing for his readers to enjoy. To release an excellent piece of fiction, you need to have a level of understanding of fiction writing. Obviously, fictional writing is an aspect of literature that’s difficult to dabble into. It takes a level of expertise to write an exceptional blockbuster. Over time, there has been a lot of mix-up in the terms used, leading to a piece of mediocre fictional works. The terms like narration, point-of-view, etc., have been overly misused.
Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer’s Guide by William H. Coles did an excellent job of enlightening and making me differentiate the mixed up terms. I clearly understand the elements that a brilliant fictional story must have. Above all, these are two lessons I took away from the book, among many others: As an author, don’t meddle in your narrations while acting as a narrator and make your story character-based. Wait! Why do you think literary stories fail? If you read this book, you will find an answer to that question and grab many more lessons.
I chose this book because I want to improve my fiction writing, and it hasn’t disappointed me. The book covers all essential aspects of literary writing like characterization, narration, point-of-view, meaning, purpose and imagery. All these ingredients must be added to a literary work in the right proportion to make a best-seller. All of these ingredients were discussed in detail in the book. William left no stone unturned.
The book is well-formatted and arranged. It is exceptionally edited because I found no errors in the book. The author delivered the book in simple and plain English that a pure beginner can easily understand the concepts explained. Perhaps, because it is the content I have been looking for, I was never bored while reading the book. The use of case studies to buttress his points gave a better insight into his explanations and credibility. The author is an experienced author with 23 books to his name: in my opinion, he is a master in the field and worth listening to.
I found no reason to dislike this book, and because of the earlier highlighted reasons, I will rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I will gladly recommend this book to aspiring writers and writers who want to improve their writing skills.
