Do you know that between 1999 to 2016, approximately 630 000 people died due to an overdose of Opioids? These shocking numbers of deaths, their causes, and the effects of opioids are fully explained in The United States of Opioids by Harry Nelson.

Opioids, just like other drugs, can be prescribed by a doctor. Using it in the right prescription has proven to cure anxiety and act as a good pain reliever. However, due to their narcotic behavior, opioids can be addictive. Frequent use of this drug in large quantities can generate adverse effects and ultimately result in death.

The United States of Opioids explained how the crisis of opioids developed and how these crises had affected the human population. It was surprising and yet sad to see how celebrities fall under the influence of this drug. I have learned a lot about opioids in this book. I also understood that not everyone with a smile on their face is indeed happy. Therefore, we should try our best to extend help when needed.

I had a hazy view about what type of drug opioids are and how it is not advisable to use them frequently. However, I could not believe my eyes after reading the first chapter of this book. I felt like I had little to no knowledge concerning how dangerous this drug could be and needed to research further. The United States of Opioids is no more than google when researching opioids as it contains facts and not some made-up numbers. All these are what I admire about the book.

I felt a huge connection to the author when reading this book. It was written in first-person narrative and felt more like listening to a friend rather than reading. I also could not find anything to dislike about the book.

The author, Mr. Harry, inspired me to read more about different types of drugs and their components. Also, to keep in touch with prescriptions and to avoid any form of drug abuse. I also learned to be in touch with my environment and be open-minded in all cases. All these contributed to why I am rating The United States of Opioids a 4 out of 4 stars.

I further recommend this book to all teenagers and adults and to everybody suffering from anxiety and depression or at the brink of overusing drugs to end pain as it is an essential book to read. Remember, there is always light at the end of a tunnel.
