Review of Who Cares?
We all experience struggle at some point while we go through life and all its hurdles. Nevertheless, we must strive towards self-development as much as we can. We must be aware of where we are and where we aim to be. Dr. Melita J. Murray-Carney, in Who Cares?: A Guided Self-Help & Devotional Journal for the Seasons of Life, attempts to guide us through the process of self-development, bringing to the forefront several facets of development, including taking on new challenges, health, gratitude, joy, love, success, anticipation, and more, that will guide readers in becoming the best versions of themselves.
The answer to the question posed by the book title, Who Cares?, is straightforward. God cares, and he is always there for us. The author expertly channels her in-depth knowledge and belief in God and His word in introducing and guiding us through her lessons. This was the first aspect of the book I enjoyed. I also found her confident tone captivating, even though this would only become an acquired attribute after she had suffered through several rough years of marriage. Trusting in God was key for her in those years and beyond, and readers will get to learn this all-important lesson as well.
The author also credits and encourages journaling as a key factor in personal development, which is an idea that I have been introduced to a few times in the past. Nevertheless, this was a well-appreciated reminder of the numerous advantages of journaling in promoting emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellness. The contents of the book are organized in a similar and well-structured fashion throughout, with the author raising relevant questions through reflections, boosting readers' confidence and setting us on the right path through affirmations, and giving us confirmations through God's word. I enjoyed how engaging the book was, especially with the author employing questions in the reflection sections, which promoted maximum reader participation.
Furthermore, Who Cares?: A Guided Self-Help & Devotional Journal for the Seasons of Life is an exceptionally well-edited read since I did not come across any errors in the guide. From lessons on optimism, patience, and perseverance as the keys to mastering difficulties in your life to lessons on focusing on problem-solving and avoiding people-pleasing, the author goes as in-depth as possible. However, there are limitations since the book is concise and could not possibly provide answers to all the questions I had.
Overall, the book is a helpful read. The fact that the central lessons in the book are not unique is a slight negative for me, even though I appreciate the reminders. The author could have included more of her personal stories to provide an injection of freshness, as we would have seen these lessons applied directly to a unique person. All things considered, I rate this book three out of four stars due to the issues I discussed. Readers interested in books about personal development and developing a stronger relationship with God will benefit from this book.
