Michael C. Higgins views Bordeaux as the centre of the wine universe. He undertook many weeks of research. He explored numerous wineries and tasted more than one thousand bottles of wine. The result was this impressive book. Exploring Wine Regions- Bordeaux France is an extraordinary book containing his colour photographs and twenty-nine maps. The book briefly describes Bordeaux’s wine history. Higgins explains that soil and climate (terroir) dictate what type of grape will flourish in a particular region. He divides the region into areas and methodically describes and reviews the wine areas in their classification ranking. He also provides many other helpful and interesting bits of information on topics other than wine. Higgins aims to inspire readers to explore the wine regions with him.

This book surpassed my expectations. It is much more than just a book about wine. The spectacular photographs alone make this book special. Higgins is a talented photographer. All the photographs are stylish and captured from interesting angles. The narrative is understated and conversational. Higgins has thoroughly researched his subject matter. One can sense his passion for the subject. He is happy to share his knowledge. The maps give geographical context to the journey. Other positive aspects are the index and the page of definitions. It was thoughtful of Higgins to mention unique points about the wineries. This will assist tourists to plan their trips. Bordeaux has something for everyone. Higgins indicates which wineries are run by women to show how women are becoming more involved in what was traditionally a man’s world. Holographic tour guides, a postcard exhibition from the war, wine barrel accommodation, music played to vines to help them grow, hot air balloon rides, bicycle rides, nearby beaches, pairings of wine and chocolate, helicopter rides, a special tea used instead of herbicides, and workshops to learn about cognac and wine barrel making are some of the novelties to be experienced when visiting Bordeaux. Many historic castles (chateaux) are featured. Higgins generously provides additional information. He mentions that he can be hired as a professional speaker and tour organizer. The restaurant reviews he provides are comprehensive. He even offers tips on shipping your wine home and information on wine tourism awards. The good news for readers is that he has also authored books on the wine regions in California and Argentina.

The only negative aspect for me was the lack of captions for the photographs. The photographs were often explained in the body of the text. I would have preferred to see an explanation of the photographs without having to read the text.

This book was professionally edited. I only noticed one small error. This did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. This magnificent book deserves a rating of 4 out of 4-stars.

I recommend this book to readers interested in wine and the history of wine and wineries, those wishing to explore France, and those with a love for photography and architecture. Both beginners and expert wine lovers will benefit from this beautiful book.
