Exploring Wine Regions – Bordeaux, France by Michael C. Higgins is a beautiful portrayal of his love for and quest to understand the making of wines, specifically in Bordeaux, France. Higgins had me captivated, at the very beginning of the book, once I read his ode on wine, that describes wine as “the art of living”. The attention to the intricacies of the wine process and lay of the land in Bordeaux, France is mesmerizing. This account makes you want to add Bordeaux to your bucket list and excited to find the various landmarks to experience the bliss as described by Higgins.

As a photojournalist this author was able to portray an eclectic display throughout this book, of art, spectacular landmarks and gastronomy. The photographs are so exquisite that you think you could reach out and be in the reality of the moment. The geographical lessons on the various regions of Bordeaux and the detailed maps and schedules of public transport make this book the prefect guide for any free-spirited traveler. There is no dull moment in this adventure as you delve through the pages. Just when you think there couldn’t possibly be more to learn, there were new nuggets of knowledge and additions to your vocabulary. Never have barrels, vats, wine bottles, soil and aged buildings been displayed so appealingly! The narrative is inviting and in easy language to show how the wine owners ensure that traditions and innovations co-exists in their operations. Details of exciting tours from wine tasting to making and blending at the plethora of wineries or chateaux are shared to show how wine tourism is gaining traction in the described regions.

I am hesitant to describe any aspect of this book as negative, however, if I am pressed to find one, I would possibly say information overload. However, I appreciated all the information given, from the guidelines of how to read the book to the detailed indexes, glossaries, maps and transport schedules.

I rate this book four out of four starsas I think it was indeed professionally written and edited.

This book could be used as a beginner’s guide to any wine lover or as an extensive guide to an oenophile. The author shared that he made many trips, over several years, actually immersing himself in the culture of Bordeaux. He actually lived in Bordeaux months at a time. These methods really exhibit the love for what you do! Higgins through his unique methods was able to create a riveting account of wine making in Bordeaux that arouses the senses of the reader. Have you ever heard of Cru Bourgeois, Noble Rot or Sexual Confusion? If not, you should get this book!

The extensive research done to bring this literature to fruition is reflective throughout this book. One sees how the wine owners have managed to diversified their operations, over time, to include creative tourism and luxury products. Exploring the region of Bordeaux with Higgins, to discover wine, food, castles and the French way of life was indeed delightful.
