[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "when god says no-" by Judith Briles.]
Things happen in life that you never see coming. You live through events that turn your whole life upside down. These things don't always make sense. Sometimes you are left with more questions than answers. What do you do? How do you handle these events? Can you hold onto your faith through it all?
When God Says No by Judith Briles is a book about what happens when the author's life turns into a hurricane of events that completely change her life forever. She starts this revealing journey with the death of her son. There was no warning to this tragic event. Briles attempts to deal with her emotions while also helping his siblings and friends through the heartache. The reader learns about the baby that the author lost at birth. The pain she went through and the inner turmoil that she battled daily. Briles talks about how her faith strengthened and helped her get through each event. There was also a business project that went wrong. Then a marriage that turned violent as it too turned in the tides. It was one thing after another. The author explains different ideas that she learned from pastors that helped her hold on and continue to push through everything life brought her way.
As Briles talks about the events in her life, she also shares the lessons that she learned. Each event helped her realize more about life. No one is ever truly ready for loss or catastrophes. I feel that previous life catastrophes can help you get through the hard things that happen later in life. In my opinion, you have two options in life. You can let whatever happened to defeat you, or you can push forward and move on.
I enjoyed this memoir and the messages intertwined in it. In some ways, some of the things that Briles experienced were relatable. This book made me think about some of the events I went through and how they impacted me. I remember some of my friends we lost in tragic accidents. How families and friends drew together to help each other try to cope.
There wasn't anything that I didn't like about the book. The author was realistic and vulnerable with what she went through. The book was well written, and the chapters flowed together. It appeared professionally edited with few errors. Therefore, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book for adult Christians who may be struggling with events in life. People who are dealing with loss and grief may find this book helpful.
