Review of Disasters To Dreams
Disasters to Dreams: A Gritty Guide to Finding Success In The Face of Failure by Chris Patrick is a 220-page, fourteen-chapter self-help book that illustrates how having hurdles in life can be used for our benefit. He challenges us to change our perspective on failure and see it as a stepping stone in succeeding, however we each define success.
Patrick unfolds each chapter with his story of overcoming adversities in his life. He details parts of his life from his relationship with his parents and being accused and charged with a crime before he was even a teenager to the phases of his life that led to the path he's on now, and the lessons he reaped from each experience. Because this book is not merely a biography but a self-help book, Patrick uses interviews with other entrepreneurs in which they discuss their own challenges and how they overcame them to help us live with intention. As a means of ensuring that the content of the book is intentionally applied in our lives, Chris Patrick features what he calls WAY (What About You) pages to help us reflect on the content of each chapter with regard to our lives.
The written structure of the WAY pages is the book's small shortfall. Considering that the aim of the section is to help us reflect, the structure of throwing questions at the reader sometimes feels like being badgered on the witness stand rather than being guided in reflection. But this only happens in the first couple of chapters, so do not give up on the book based on that because, even though the structure can throw one off, it is not to say that the purpose is not fulfilled. The structure he adopts asks a main question followed by supporting ones that can help clarify the first one or direct the reader's thinking toward specificity, so do not allow this small factor to put you off as the book has several great aspects.
Some of the book's strong points include its simple writing style and diction that make it feel like you are just listening to a friend give you advice using his life experiences and interactions with other people to help you strategise a comeback from the setback you are going through. As with good friends, there are no holds barred and Patrick shoots straight throughout the book with hints of humour that will put a smile on your face.
As much as the book's advice is applicable to anyone who seeks motivation regarding how to play the bad hand they're dealt, the consistent use of expletives throughout the book can make it a difficult read for readers who are uncomfortable with the use of profane language. The book was exceptionally edited so the reader will not have to constantly jump over spelling and grammar hurdles. All of these factors considered, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend that if you think it's your kind of book, you should definitely read it.
