[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Rise & Thrive: Quotes To Start Your Day" by Lisa Blackshaw.]
Finding inspiration during this pandemic is not easy. How is one supposed to think positively and achieve goals with so much uncertainty? This question is the premise of Rise and Thrive: Quotes To Start Your Day. Lisa Blackshaw wants to help readers be inspired every day and provides tips in her book on how to do it. Inspirational quotes from people such as Zig Ziglar, Winston Churchill, and Helen Keller are provided strategically throughout the book. Morning routine tips, learning to say no, and sharing inspiration with others are some of the discussion points in this work. If you are new to positive thinking, this title will be one of your go-to books.
The discussion of Eleanor Roosevelt as the First Lady of the United States was my favorite part of the book. I had no idea that her presence and actions stimulated the desegregation of genders in the USA, which made this section very educative and enjoyable. I was also surprised that many of the quotes I am familiar with came from this brave woman. Including Mrs. Roosevelt in this book was a fantastic decision by the author.
I also enjoyed how Lisa broke down each part of the book into a few pages. Occasionally, there was a slightly longer chapter, but the longer sections did not bother me. Having the ability to read this book in bite-sized pieces was relaxing because Lisa talks about a lot of information with her readers. The layout of this book will satisfy any reader with a short attention span.
One complaint I have is the lack of explanations in each section. The book intends to provide quotes for readers, but the author explains why the quotes are significant before introducing them. I expected these explanations to be more fleshed out, but they were not. However, because I have read many books about success, my expectations were very high before I selected this book. Lisa wanted a write a simple yet effective self-help book, and she has done just that.
There are no religious aspects in this book, so readers will not have to worry about favoritism in this regard. Sadly, I found numerous grammatical errors in the text; many of them were words that should not have been hyphenated. These errors are why I have to rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Despite my one complaint about the explanations, this critique is more of a personal feeling and should not reflect the quality of this title. In fact, I have posted one of the quotes from this work to my bathroom mirror. This act shows that even veterans in successful thinking can gain something from this book. I recommend Rise and Thrive: Quotes To Start Your Day for beginners in positive thinking.
