Review of The Power of Ten
The pursuit of true happiness has gone from being a byline to the position of a critical study in the evolution of the world as we know it today. Civilization has evolved with the help of great thinkers who espouse philosophical theories with supposed answers to this pursuit. These numerous works have only led to even more questions than answers. The belief that the study of philosophy as a way of life holds the key to unlocking this puzzle is slowly gaining ground among the enlightened and those of a lesser appreciation. With so much knowledge available at the click of a button in this modern age, can this be the time when a solution acceptable to all schools of thought will be discovered?
The building blocks of society and the intrinsic relationship with the welfare of the individual are thoroughly researched in this compilation. The Power of Ten is written from the point of view that such positive philosophical reasoning will inevitably lead us to live happier and satisfying lives. The approach to the book is unique, as ten of the foremost philosophical thinkers of our time have their notable works thoroughly dissected.
The arrangement of the book is fascinating. "The Thinkers," as Mike de Val calls them, are arranged in chronological order. The profiling of each of these great men is quite thorough. Readers can understand the rationale and motivations behind their writings from the background details. It is also nice to note that the technical jargon is kept at a level that any layperson can conveniently follow, unlike most philosophy-inspired books. It is simplistic and accommodating, for want of a more appropriate term to use.
I do not have anything negative to say about this book. The errors are few. The use of some old English terminologies may puzzle a reader at first. However, they'll get used to it as they delve deeper into the narrative.
Members of the various schools of philosophical reasoning will find this book an excellent addition to their libraries. It can also serve as an introduction to beginners in the field.
The Power of Ten is quite revealing for a nonfiction book. It lays bare the evidence available and leaves the reader with a decision on which path to follow. Merely visualizing the mystery behind "The ship of Theseus" is baffling and convincing enough for me. This book has earned 4 out of 4 stars.
