[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Loving Myself and You" by Pradeepa Narayanaswamy.]
Loving Myself and You by Pradeepa Narayanaswamy is a self-help book. In it, the author discusses lessons that she's learned in her lifetime. Her goal is to help readers learn to love themselves. Several times, she discusses her struggles with infertility. One of my favorite lessons involves finding a way to cherish every moment. The author does an exercise that consists of holding a grape in her mouth for five minutes before eating it, increasing the anticipation. This, in turn, teaches her to savor every moment.
The book is about 120 pages which makes it a short read. Each chapter is a lesson. There's a question or two at the end of most chapters to use for self-reflection. It's a book to be savored and not rushed through. This will ensure the reader gets the most out of the book.
The author is Indian and uses Indian terms such as "bindi." When she uses terms that not everyone may be familiar with, she makes sure to explain them. This is extremely helpful to the average reader. Also, there are footnotes in certain places. Clicking on these will take you to the note. Clicking on the number before the note will take you right back to where you were reading. It's very well organized.
I also enjoyed the casual tone of the book. The author isn't condescending or preachy. Being a life coach, she simply wants to teach you lessons she's learned over the years. Themes include being happy with what you have and who you are, only doing those things that bring you joy, and even not judging others.
In addition, the author includes quotes that are inspirational. My favorite comes on page 113 of the book. The original source is a strategic coaching blog. It states: "FEAR IS WETTING YOUR PANTS, and COURAGE IS doing what you’re supposed to do with wet pants.” This really resonated with me.
There were a few minor errors in the book. They were not numerous and didn't distract from my enjoyment of the book. Mostly, they consisted of missing or extra words and incorrect capitalization. After the last two chapters, there were no questions. I wasn't sure if this was a choice on the author's part or a mistake. This was the only negative I found.
I believe the author has much to teach us if we will only listen. Because of this as well as the lack of issues, I rate Loving Myself and You 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to any self-help fans or anyone who wants to learn more about how to appreciate themselves.
