Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life by Lewis Kempfer is a memoir about how one event spirals downhill after another. Lewis Kempfer grew up with an emotional as well as a physically abusive father, few to no friends, and a strong wish to be seen and loved. And this was only the beginning. As a reader, we get to follow him through stages of hurt, low self-esteem, and self-harming behaviors. The reader is invited to walk beside him through his life, trying to find love and seeing his struggles with religion, dreams, and open wounds.

This book drew me in right from the start. First of all; the book cover made me curious, then the title made me intrigued, and lastly, the prologue hooked me to continue reading until there were no pages left. Lewis Kempfer's writing style is simply stunning. It is one of those rare writing styles where even the darkest of moments have a witty undertone and a beautiful simplicity that makes the reading comfortable and fast-paced. I was constantly in suspense after every new scene about how this would contribute to the ‘bad life’ and it made for a quick read.

I honestly tried to find a single negative aspect about Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life but it seems to be impossible. The only negative thing is the plot itself, which is far too tragic to be allowed to exist, however, seeing as it is a memoir there is little to be done about that. This book was well-written, well-edited, and simply amazing. There are no negative aspects that I can think of.

It probably comes as no surprise that my rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. Lewis Kempfer is an author I will be looking out for from now on. I will, no doubt in mind, have this book in my heart and mind forever, and that is not something I say lightly. Therefore, it has been given the highest rating from me.

I would like to say that everyone should read this book since it made such a huge impact on me. However, knowing the themes in this book I would like to redo that statement. This book is, firstly, for a mature audience due to explicit content. Secondly, I recommend this book for people with a curiosity about how an innocent child can grow up to be compared with destruction. Lastly, I recommend this book for people who know exactly how that can happen and who desperately want someone to relate to, to walk with someone through their journey.

Thank you, Lewis Kempfer, for having written Don’t Mind Me, I’m Just Having a Bad Life, it was truly exquisite.
