[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The First Time Father" by Thomas Alfie.]
Throughout pregnancy, it's the wife who requires the most attention. She is the one who has to carry the baby and pounds of water inside her. Her body changes dramatically, and she must eat a lot for the child's sake. She suffers from morning sickness and back pains. What about her husband? Where is he when all of these happen? Is he enjoying his normal life, and his wife's issues are hers alone?
Actually, an expectant father has many things to learn to mentally and physically support himself and his family. Aside from feeding the newborn and changing diapers, he must save lots of money for several types of costs. He will also encounter various problems, such as gaining weight, anxiety, mood swings, nausea, changes in sex drive, stress, or aches. Is this really true? How is that possible? Are you, a first-time father, starting to panic after hearing that? That's alright! Alfie Thomas shall share his personal experiences and tips with you in his The First Time Father: The Expectant Survival Guide for First-Time Dads Through Pregnancy Journey.
I enjoy the way the author narrates his story with a cheerful tone, honestly depicting his feelings while giving us an outlook on his situation. The humor makes this self-help book a friendly talk between friends, where the author lightly jokes about the difficulties during his wife's pregnancy. For example, the way he acts and thinks while waiting for the child to come out is quite funny. Nonetheless, mothers will understand his wife's labor pains, and fathers can relate to his restlessness, fear, and maybe curiosity.
Moreover, the author carefully explains useful things that parents need to prepare for their children. He introduces the terms, the way a baby develops through the trimesters, the Couvade syndrome, the financial issues, the daily chores, and the living skills kids will need. Along with these, he offers simple but effective solutions. Additionally, there will be warnings about foods and lifestyles to keep both the mother and the little one healthy.
The only shortcoming of this copy is the grammar errors. There are so many of them that I can't give this book the highest score. Thus, I will rate it 3 out of 4 stars. It's most suitable for new parents, but it can be a great help for anyone who is waiting for their newborn. This is a perfect manual for husbands to be more involved in welcoming and raising kids. New dads may be clumsy, nervous, or even awkward when it comes to caring for their babies and their wives, but love will help.
