Review of Unshattered Dreams
Destiny may be delayed but can never be changed; one must only be progressive minded. It purely describes the author’s life. Unshattered Dreams, a non-fiction book by Elizabeth Cirani, tells the story of a woman’s life and how she was able to navigate through life’s trials and unexpected harsh realities.
Elizabeth Cirani was born in a typical third-world country and came from a family that made do with the life they lived, even seeing it as comfortable. As a young child, she had two dreams: to go to the university and have a church wedding. However, life struck when she couldn’t score enough marks to go to the university and got worse when she got pregnant out of wedlock. A strong-willed Elizabeth was not deterred by these disappointments but continued pressing on. With God’s help, she made it to the Kenya polytechnic and afterward went higher to being a temporary United Nations librarian. How much higher can she climb? Read up on the author’s victory story.
The book was a flashback as the author, in New York, recounts her early life as a girl in Kenya. The book expressed the themes of family, salvation, and nostalgia. Even though I have not had many life experiences like the author, I could also feel the emotions of remembering the day of trekking so many miles to school and playing barefooted in the soil. In the first few chapters where introductions were made, the author used vivid and clear descriptive words that created an effect of imagery. I could imagine myself as a third person in her stories.
The book evoked various emotions at different points in her life, such as sadness, happiness, joy, curiosity, and empathy. A part of this book that I loved was that it contained poems and quotes from various poets and speakers. The book even starts with a poem-like epigraph. The inclusion of the words of Marianne Williamson was thrilling and inspiring, and it made my love for this book complete. At a stage in the author’s life, she experienced God and became born again, and from that point, her life never remained the same. The book contained Bible quotes that served as encouragement and a backup for some situations that she faced.
The book was very impactful. It preached God and salvation. It also included prayers, advice, and words of comfort to readers. It further exposed the ills of abuse, such as emotional trauma, physical pain, and psychological turbulence.
There was nothing to dislike about this book. It lived up to its title as the author’s life showed that we can still rise above them all despite what life throws at us. Therefore, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. The book is professionally edited, as I observed a few errors in it.
I recommend this book to individuals who are facing a rough time. One could get inspiration from the author’s story. It would also appeal to lovers of motivational and inspirational novels.
